Move over, Wheeler's Black Label!

I know those are big words coming from a girl who's never had a chance to try Wheeler's Black Label (unlike these lucky ducks: Hannah, Emilie, Bazu, and Chocolate Covered Vegan), which has been touted as the nirvana of vegan ice cream (or of any ice cream, for that matter), but this is one of the best vegan ice creams I've ever tasted. It's none other than the Cashew Banana Ice Cream from Dreena Burton's newest release, Eat, Drink & Be Vegan. When I first opened ED&BV, I remember seeing this recipe and immediately slicing and freezing the overripe bananas I had on my kitchen counter in anticipation of whipping this up someday. Well, that someday just happened to have been tonight, after the third demanding day in a row.

The ice cream came together really quickly and was the consistency of slightly textured soft serve. My cashew butter was pretty dry, which didn't bother me at all, and actually added a nice amount of graininess to the ice cream. You see, I'm a girl who likes stuff in her ice cream and this saved me from adding in some of my beloved carob chips. What an incredibly delicious treat (no, I didn't eat that entire bowl full) and it's healthy, too! There's not even a drop of sugar in it, as it's sweetened with maple syrup (or agave, if you prefer). I'm telling you, you will not be sorry if you go make yourself some Cashew Banana Ice Cream right now!

[Edit: The ice cream is made in the food processor, so you can make it even if you don't have an ice cream maker!]

Cashew Banana Ice Cream! Oh my I can't wait for my copy of ED&BV to arrive. I ordered it like a month ago, the delay has something to do with reprinting or something.

I love how there is no sugar added to this ice cream, it sounds like it is sweet and plenty good enough without it.

I looks so yummy!

Speaking on behalf of those of us who have not been blessed with a gift from Wheelers yet (hint hint Wheeler...) - bring on the cashew banana ice cream! That sounds amazing, winter or not!

Yum, that sounds great.. even though it looks a bit like baby poop! ;)

What's up with those Wheeler folks not giving L.A. any love? I too contacted them a while ago with a very nice request to have an ice cream tasting (as per their own offer on their website), but never even got so much as a reply. I'd hoped to surprise you, Your Vegan Mom and a few others from our local blogging contingency with an unexpected tasting party. Is it that they are just so popular now that they really don't need our free advertising?

Oh well... at least you're taking matters into your own hands, bypassing the middleman and making your own damn ice cream!

Don't feel too bad - I haven't tried Wheeler's either! Dreena's ice cream sounds like it definitely makes do. I have all the ingredients, too... And the cashew butter I have is pretty dry too, which is normally unfortunate, but it sounds like it would work in this recipe!!!

I'm sure this is absolutely incredible, but seriously... Just wait until you try Wheeler's. ;)

I made the ice cream! I used peanut butter instead, but it was still SOOOOOO good! I'll blog about it later, and thank you for reminding me about the banana in my freezer!

With recipes like this, I could wind up gaining weight by having gone vegan!

You're right-- I am not making cashew banana ice cream right now and I AM sorry :o(

I don't have my ice cream maker here at my apartment, so I can't make any... but it looks divine! Eat an extra serving for me, 'kay?

Yikes, I feel so dumb... I didn't read the last part of your entry about it being made in the food processor!

I'll definitely be trying this-- maybe even tonight! Well, maybe not tonight, as it's a cold and rainy day, better for soup!

But I agree with vegan noodle; I woulda eaten the whole bowl LOL. You must be very strong-willed to have left some hehe.
